National Kitesurf Racing Round 3

Barrow in Cumbria was the location for the latest round of the BKSA Course Racing and which had 21 racers from around the country entered and trying their best in the great conditions that Earnse Bay had to offer. The area receives a lot of wind and if you look out onto the horizon from the beach you can see all the off shore wind turbines tapping into one of nature’s free form of energy.
The forecast was for the 2 day event was good wind for Saturday and not much for the Sunday so the Race crew set up a course quite early and 3 races were run in the morning and it was Callum Edge who set the pace with Denzil Williams from Cornwall hot on his tail and the fight for 3rd position was between Lee Harvey ‘pasty’ also from Cornwall and Jason McCaffery. The 3 races were run back to back so that meant that as soon as the 1st person had crossed the line they set a 10 minute limit for the rest to cross over the line then start the next race which meant people were not getting any rest in between the races and were getting quite tired.
The race crew then had a lunch break which should have lasted just an hour but extended into 3 because the tide had gone out too far leaving the safety craft and race boat grounded! But then racing resumed late afternoon and they ran 5 races back to back in the wind that had increased to about 20 knots by now which made for very fast racing.
Callum and Denzil were continuing their fight at the front of the pack hotly followed by Lee but Jason was making mistakes and fell back quite considerably leaving it open for Lee. New to this event was the introduction of gates which meant that you had to pass between 2 bouys (the gate) on the way to the upwind marker, this meant you had to put more tacks in (change in direction of travel) and made it more tactical which was a great success. Twice Denzil made the gate from the start line which meant he didn’t need to change tacks an extra 2 times and gained him a great lead so in the last race of the day he won followed by Callum and in the 6th Race of the day Lee won followed by Denzil then Callum.
A total of 8 races were run on the Saturday which is the maximum allowed races in one day, sadly Sunday the wind had blown itself out and so no more racing took place but it meant that Denzil and Pasty could get a head start on their way back to Sunny Cornwall!
